The Nullarbor Plain is the largest limestone karst landscape in the world. It covers an area of 270,000 sq km in South Australia and into Western Australia. The word Nullarbor comes from “null” and “arbor” meaning no trees; and that is because this is a very barren, flat section of land bordered by the Great Victoria Desert to the north and to the south are the magnificent Bunda Cliffs and blue waters of the Great Australian Bight. The Eyre Highway runs right through the Nullarbor Plain and you will need a 4WD vehicle to get from one end to the other. It begins in Ceduna, South Australia and heads west to Norseman Western Australia, but most travellers will continue west to Perth. This is an iconic Australian Outback road trip. If you traverse the entire trip, you can even buy a sticker sold at roadhouses along the highway that says, “I have crossed the Nullarbor”.

Cape Le Grand National Park is just an hour drive from Esperance to this coastal park with picturesque views over the Southern Ocean. The park is 31,801 hectares and is known for its scenic coastal views and secluded bays. You can only reach the park with an all-terrain vehicle or a 4WD truck. Popular activities in the park consist of playing in the beaches of the sheltered bays in the park, bushwalking, mountain hiking, fishing, boating, and camping. The protected land is home to pygmy possums, western grey kangaroos and plenty of colourful wildflowers with prominent yellow patches of banksias when in bloom. In addition to the flora and fauna diversity, this protected park land is significant because it is an ancient landscape estimated to have been above sea level for more than 200 million years and has remained unglaciated. So, you can find many primitive relict species here.

Cape Leveque is located 240 km north of Broome at the northernmost tip of the Dampier Peninsula, which is at the top of the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. Like most of the places here in the Kimberley, Cape Leveque has strong ties to its aboriginal history and culture. The traditional landowners are the Bardi people. As you might imagine, this is a very remote place within a remote place and the road here is rugged and takes about 2 ½ hours, but the amazing coastal views make it all worthwhile. There is an eco-friendly luxury wilderness camp at Cape Leveque called Kooljaman Resort. Kooljaman is the Bardi name for Cape Leveque. You will enjoy the stunning white sand beaches here in this very isolated place. The accommodations at Kooljaman allow you to listen to the crashing waves and watch the sunrise all from your bed in the open air cabins.

When travelling through the remote Kimberley region in the north of Western Australia, you can hire a car at the Broome Airport  or rent a car and the Broome Downtown location. Most of the areas of the Kimberley region can only be accessed with a four wheel drive vehicle, so be sure to have the proper vehicle and emergency supplies when driving through this area. Keep in mind that since this is remote and rugged terrain, safety guidelines must be taken very seriously. Check with your car rental agent to get important guidelines, safety information, and driving maps. Many of our locations are unable to obtain insurance for under 21 year old drivers who are therefore required, prior to the start of the rental, to present an original Insurance Certificate of Currency - not a cover note - that indemnifies the replacement value of Budget's vehicle and third party property damage up to $20 million for any one occurrence.
