4WD Adventures in Australia Part One

4WD Adventures in Australia Part One

Budget Truck Rentals are not only used for moving. One of the most popular rental choices for our customers at Budget Trucks is hiring 4WD or all-terrain vehicles to traverse through some of Australia’s most rugged terrain. When you decide to holiday in Australia’s outback or a rugged national park, you need a 4WD vehicle to get to your adventure safely. One important thing to remember is that you don’t need a 4WD to get to all outback destinations, so if you are unsure, ask our knowledgeable agents. That is why we always say to share your itinerary with our agents when planning a car or truck hire for your holiday. We are here to help with the right vehicle recommendations and even travel tips. When you travel through remote areas in Australia, it is very important to plan ahead and pay close attention to the posted safety precautions, carry emergency supplies, protect your skin from the sun, keep plenty of drinking water on hand, and let someone not travelling with you know where you are going and when you are expected back. Here are three very different 4WD adventures throughout Australia.

Not every 4WD destination is in the outback. Some are located in National Parks and some are on the beach. This is one of those cases, the Stockton Beach drive runs from Williamtown to Anna Bay in New South Wales in alongside Worimi National Park. Stockton Beach is one of the most well-known 4WD beach driving locations. You can drive right along the beach and through other sections of Worimi National Park. While you are here, enjoy a beach picnic, take a dip in the ocean, surf the waves, fish from the beach or explore the shipwreck of the MV Sygna that is located just off the beach.

The Simpson Desert French Line is a road trip through the red sands of the desert where a 4WD or all-terrain vehicle will definitely be required. It begins in Dalhousie Springs (also known as Edith Springs) South Australia and takes you northeast for 439 km across state lines into Queensland to the outback town of Birdsville. The suggested time to allow for this road trip is 3 days and the best time to travel is from May through September. A dune flag is recommended since some of the roads are one way and it is hard to see oncoming traffic over some of the rugged, tall sand dunes. Camping spots can be made in some of the flatter areas between the dunes. Besides the adventurous drive, you should plan to swim in the Dalhousie Hot Springs and enjoy the accommodations in Birdsville.

The Gibb River Road is known as one of the best road trips in Australia. It takes drivers on an adventure across the Kimberley, a remote region in the northern section of Western Australia. You will need a 4WD vehicle to get to pretty much any location in The Kimberley and to drive the Gibb River Road. It is actually part of a larger road trip called the Savannah Way which takes you from the east coast to the west coast across northern Australia. This is the western section of the larger road trip that takes you 660 km from Derby to Kununurra. The only time you can take this road trip is during the dry season between May and September; but the shorter window doesn’t make this remote drive crowded. In fact, you likely won’t see many other people at all because this region is so remote and unexplored. The reward for traversing the rugged outback is all of the amazing scenery that is just breathtaking. Here are the landmarks to look for along the Gibb River Road:

  • Bell Gorge
  • Windjana Gorge
  • The Cockburn Range
  • Home Valley Station
  • The MItchell Plateau (Most of which can only can be seen from a scenic flight)
  • El-Questro Wilderness Park where you can stay overnight when not camping.

Hiring a Car in the Kimberley

Truck Rental Locations near Kimberley Region, WA Photo Credit:

When travelling through the Kimberley, there are two main cities that have car hire locations: Broome, in the southwest corner of the region and Kununurra, in the northeast area of the region. You can hire a car at the Broome Airport, or rent a car and the Broome Downtown location. There are two car rental locations in Kununurra, one in the city and you can also hire a car at the Kununurra Airport. Most of the areas of the Kimberley region can only be accessed with a four wheel drive vehicle, so be sure to have the proper vehicle and emergency supplies when driving through this area. Keep in mind that since this is remote and rugged terrain, safety guidelines must be taken very seriously. Check with your car rental agent to get important guidelines, safety information, and driving maps.
