New Home Design and Decorating Tips

So you have a brand new home, congratulations! Think of it as a blank canvas to create your design masterpiece on. This is the perfect time to paint the walls before you move the furniture in, and you can design it any way you want. Think about the colours you want for each room and coordinate the shape of the room with the pieces you want in each. When you plan out the design of each room before you move all of your furniture and belongings in, that is the perfect time to start from scratch.

Blank Canvas

Part of the beauty of moving into a new home is the benefit of being able to easily make changes and design the blank canvas of your new home to fit your needs. Once you have all of the furniture, flooring, and décor in place, changing some basic elements becomes a huge project. If you take care of some items on your wish list before moving everything in, it is much easier and quicker. It can be a ledge on a window, an extra breakfast nook in the kitchen, etc.

Plan Ahead

Before you move, plan ahead and make a wish list for the designs and décor in your new home. Go through magazines and websites and collect pictures of your favourite design elements, colours, and style features. Sketch out a floor plan so that you know what will fit in your space and get an idea of how it will look. Don’t overcrowd the rooms. Measure everything to ensure that it will fit and look right. Once you have made a short list of everything that you like, then you can narrow it down to what fits your budget and what fits in your space. Speaking of budget, planning ahead and picking out the designs you want ahead of time allow you to search for the best prices and bargains. This plan will allow you to take the time to find the absolute right pieces, colour, and design for you.

Finding the Right Bargains

Be aware of low cost that can often be accompanied by low quality. Look for good deals, but not necessarily the cheapest price, which can make quality suffer. Sometimes you will want to spring for a great piece of furniture, but not to worry, it will last you for many years to come. Where you can find bargains is in the accessories and accent pieces. You can often shop around to find inexpensive mirrors, lamps, accent pillows, etc. One key tip to keeping in your budget and still obtaining the furniture and design elements you want is to take it slow. You don’t need to furnish and design everything in every room of the house all at once. Take your time and do one room at a time if you need to. No need to re-do everything in the home either. Save some money by re-painting to make something your own. A good example of this is cabinets. You can paint them and add new hardware to achieve a completely different look without buying and installing new cabinets.

Keep a Bit of Nostalgia with Your New Start

Yes, a move is a new start and a way to begin anew. However, never forget where you came from. Be sure to include a few old favourites in your design. Adding that classic touch to your new look will bring you a sense of comfort and also be a conversation piece in your new home. Just because you are starting over with a new home doesn’t mean that you cannot keep some of your old home, memories, and nostalgia.

Need a Place to Get Started? Begin in Your Bedroom

You spend about a third of your time in your bedroom, so it is definitely an important room. Start your design in your bedroom and don’t fight the urge to spend a little more to sleep more comfortably. Your bed is going to play a huge role in your comfort and your ability to get a good night’s sleep every night. In addition to that, invest in sheets and bedding with a high thread count for comfort and durability. Your bed and your bedding will stay with you for many years.

Many of our locations are unable to obtain insurance for under 21 year old drivers who are therefore required, prior to the start of the rental, to present an original Insurance Certificate of Currency - not a cover note - that indemnifies the replacement value of Budget's vehicle and third party property damage up to $20 million for any one occurrence. The certificate must be issued by a reputable insurer (as opposed to a broker) and is accepted at the discretion of the prospective location with which arrangements should be made directly.
