Moving Tips and Tricks

Moving Tips and Tricks

When you are planning to move the one thing you can’t have enough of is tips and tricks for making your move and packing easier. We have compiled a list of some great tips for moving. Add these tips to your moving checklist to help make your move less stressful and less work.

Make a Packing Basket

Keep all of your packing supplies together while you are packing. Keeping them in one place will help you stay organised and ensure that you don’t keep misplacing or even accidentally pack your packing supplies.

Does the back of your computer and television sets look like this? Take a picture of what they look like so you have a visual guide for putting them back together the way they were.

Moving Your Refrigerator

Moving Your Refrigerator

If you are taking your refrigerator with you, there are some specific tips for moving it without making a mess. Moving your refrigerator requires some planning in advance because it needs to be emptied and defrosted ahead of time; so be sure to add it to your checklist and calendar. Empty out your refrigerator 3 days before you move. Then defrost, clean and towel dry the refrigerator 24 to 48 hours before moving day. This will ensure that it doesn’t get smelly and doesn’t leak all over the place during your move.

Cut Carrying Holes in Your Boxes

Make your boxes easy to carry by cutting handles into them. This is a great idea and will help wear and tear on your back. Don’t get fatigued unnecessarily.

Specialty Boxes

In some cases, spending a little extra for the added convenience is worth it. These specialty boxes have a bar ready to hang shirts. It makes packing and unpacking very quick and easy.

Pack a ‘First Night Box’

First Night Box

We have given you moving tips before and advised that packing an overnight bag is a good idea to keep your things that you will need during your move. You should also pack a ‘first night box’ which is for the first night in your new home. In addition for the things you might need overnight during your move, this will come in handy with some of the things you will need the day you move into your home. It might include toilet paper and other toiletries for the bathroom and shower and some snacks. (Moving can make you very hungry!) If you have coffee or tea every morning, put your coffee maker or tea pot and the supplies in your ‘First Night Box’ so that it will be ready for you the first morning.

Double Up Your Fitted Sheets

Double Up Sheets

Protect your mattress during your move by putting extra fitted sheets both on the top and the bottom of your mattress. This will protect your mattress from getting dirty during the move. It also eliminates the need for you to pack your fitted sheets. We know you didn’t want to have to try to fold those!

Organize Seasonal Decorations

Organize Seasonal Items in Bins

If you don’t already have your storage and seasonal things organised and labelled, this is a perfect time to get that done. Put different holiday or seasonal décor in storage bins. This will serve you well during the move and afterwards. Start fresh, clean, and organised in your new home.

Empty Gas and Oil from Lawn Equipment and Tools

Empty Gas

You should not move any equipment or tools that use gas or oil without first thoroughly draining the oil and gas out of them. Check with the manual for proper instructions on how to empty each piece of equipment.

Leave Light Items in Drawers

Leave In Drawers

Rather than unpacking everything in your drawers, leave some light weight non-breakable items in your drawers. When you load your dressers or armoires with the drawers into the moving truck, line the drawers up against the wall of the moving truck.

Many of our locations are unable to obtain insurance for under 21 year old drivers who are therefore required, prior to the start of the rental, to present an original Insurance Certificate of Currency - not a cover note - that indemnifies the replacement value of Budget's vehicle and third party property damage up to $20 million for any one occurrence. The certificate must be issued by a reputable insurer (as opposed to a broker) and is accepted at the discretion of the prospective location with which arrangements should be made directly.
