Tamworth is a New South Wales city that is located inland on the western side of the Great Dividing Range in the New England region. It is situated on the Peel River and is the major regional centre for the region. It is known for equine events and country music. Tamworth began to develop in the 1830’s and was gazetted in 1850. It is known as the “First City of Light” because it was the first place in Australia to have electric street lighting that was powered by a municipally owned power station in 1888.

If you are moving to Tamworth, it might be for a job in the retail industry, which is the largest employer in the city.  Tamworth is the biggest retail centre in the New England region. The 2nd and 3rd top employers are manufacturing and health services respectively. The most prolific types of businesses are property and business services, agriculture and construction, and finance and insurance services. Tourism is also a pretty significant industry for Tamworth with most of the tourist dollars coming in during the annual Tamworth Country Music Festival, the biggest country music festival in all of the Southern Hemisphere. The Golden Guitar Country Music Awards are also held here. While in the region, tourists also visit Tamworth’s museums and galleries, or the Marsupial Park. In addition, locals and visitors alike enjoy visiting the picturesque and quaint nearby towns of Barraba, Nundle, and Quirindi.

Tamworth is known as the sporting horse capital of Australia and the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre was built here in 2008. It is the headquarters for three major equine associations CHA, ABCRA, and AQHA. Various competitions and events are held at the centre. Horse riding is a popular activity with all of the horse lovers here.

The rich agriculture industry in Tamworth the the New England region has made it a hub for food and wine enthusiasts. Delicious and locally sourced food and wines are available at the restaurants and wineries here. Tamworth has an emerging wine industry with 20 cellar doors and a Taste Tamworth festival held every April.

Tamworth’s climate is on the warmer side with hot summers and mild winters. Average high temperatures in summer range between 28 °C and 33 °C. Average lows during winter time range from 3 °C to 5 °C. The average precipitation is 632.7 mm per year with an average of 83 rainy days a year. The rainy season runs through the spring and summer with the possibility of storms that cause flooding especially in January. Tamworth usually does not see snow in the winter, but some of the surrounding villages like Nundle and Frosts can see snow.

These are some general moving tips and advice if you are moving to any city in Australia. The important thing is to plan ahead, get organised, and don’t wait for the last minute when you are moving.

  • Make sure your passport is valid and up-to-date. Obtain a visa if you are going to need one.
  • Get an international free email address so that you will be able to keep in touch. Checkout Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail.
  • Connect with a relocation agent to help you find a job and a place to live.
  • Start going through your clothing and other belongings to see what you can sell or giveaway before it’s time to pack.
  • If you are moving from another country, check the compatibility of your appliances. Australia uses voltage 220-240 volts.
  • Start to inventory the items you are taking and see if you have receipts for those items.
  • Start getting quotes for renting a moving truck or hiring a moving company and decide which one is best for you.
  • Ask about the cost marine insurance. This is based on the value of the things you are taking.
  • Take pictures of everything you are moving, especially the more expensive items to keep a record for insurance purposes.
  • Make a checklist and a calendar and stick to them.
