Best Places for a Four Wheel Drive Holiday

Back in February, we highlighted some of the best 4WD vacation spots  and popular four wheel drive holiday destinations. Our blog post featured the Trip to the Tip of Queensland on the Cape York Peninsula, Gibb River Road across northern Western Australia, the Binns Track in the Northern Territory, Victorian High Country and Billy Goats Bluff in Victoria, and Stockton Beach in New South Wales.

The best time to plan a road trip here is from May to October during the dry season. We have 3 truck rental locations in northern Queensland. You can hire a truck in Townsville, rent a 4WD in Cairns, or rent a vehicle in Port Douglas.

The Gibb River Road Trip is one of the most popular road trips in all of Australia. This trip takes you across the famed Kimberley Region of Western Australia. The 930 km road trip starts on the west coast in Derby and ends in Kununurra close to the Northern Territory border. It is a remote location filled with national parks, gorges, waterfalls, swimming holes, and Aboriginal villages. Allow at least 3 days for this road trip holiday. Try to plan to go during the dry season from May to September. You can choose to rent a truck either in Kununurra or rent a truck in Broome, which is near Derby on the west coast. When travelling through this region, make sure to ask for emergency provisions, a spare tyre, supplies, and keep extra water with you at all times.

The Binns Track

The Binns Track is an outback road trip through some very rugged desert terrain in the Northern Territory. There are mountains and valleys on this desert track with jagged rocks, bogs, and dry riverbeds to navigate through. There are two truck rental locations in Alice Springs. You can hire a 4WD vehicle in the city of Alice Springs or you can rent a truck right from the Alice Springs airport if you arrive there to start your outback road trip. Be sure to let your truck rental agent know where you are planning to go so that they can help guide you on your holiday road trip through the outback.

This 4WD drive only off road holiday takes you up into the mountains through the Australian Alps. The 300 km scenic adventure brings you up to a height of 1,480 elevation from Mansfield to Harrietville. Use caution because Billy Goats Bluff is only for experienced mountain drivers. There are plenty of places where you can hire a truck or 4WD vehicle in Melbourne. From Melbourne, you can then head northeast to start your off-road adventure in Mansfield. If you are driving in the winter, you will want to make sure that your vehicle has the right tires for snow or ice.

Many of our locations are unable to obtain insurance for under 21 year old drivers who are therefore required, prior to the start of the rental, to present an original Insurance Certificate of Currency - not a cover note - that indemnifies the replacement value of Budget's vehicle and third party property damage up to $20 million for any one occurrence. The certificate must be issued by a reputable insurer (as opposed to a broker) and is accepted at the discretion of the prospective location with which arrangements should be made directly.
