The Hay River track runs through the northern section of the Simpson Desert from Birdsville in Queensland to Gemtree in Northern Territory. It is over 900 km long and the suggested minimum travel time is 9 days. The best time to travel this remote, extinct river track is in May through September. You will need to get a permit to pass through this area which is owned by the Aboriginal original owners of the land. Along the journey enjoy the dramatic contrasts in the landscapes between the Big Ted and Spinifex dunes and the Georgina Gidgee and Gypcrete Interdunes. The track levels off at the Hay River bed and Lake Caroline. Bring your own supplies and emergency gear because there aren’t any towns or places to stop for supplies along this track. Early in September, Birdsville is home to the racing carnival, an event that brings thousands to the town with a year round population of just 120. It’s quite an event to plan on attending before the Hay River track road trip.

The Simpson Desert French Line road trip starts out in Dalhousie Springs South Australia and ends in Birdsville, the same place where the Hay River Track begins. The recommended minimum travel time for this 4WD road trip is 3 days and is 439 km. The best time to travel this road is between May and September. This track is the quickest way through the desert, but the direct route can be a challenging drive. There are 1200 sand dunes on the Simpson Desert French Line. On top of that, the French Line is only wide enough for one vehicle at a time, so watching for oncoming traffic is very important. Flying a dune flag, honking for warning and carrying a radio are strongly advised safety tips. There are plenty of great places to set up camp along this route and the Dalhousie hot springs are not to be missed.
